Beginners’ Guide to Using Sewer Drain Snakes
Even professional plumbers with years of experience have issues with their equipment, especially with sewer drain snakes breaking. However, learning how to correctly handle the drain cable can drastically increase its life, saving you time and money. Here are some basics on how to use a sewer drain snake properly when clearing a main line.
Starting off, locate the main line cleanout and remove the cap. Check for standing water in the pipe. If you notice standing water, run the drain cleaning cable toward the street. If you do not see any standing water, you will need to run the cable toward the house. Make sure to position the drain machine as close as possible to the cleanout. The less slack there is when the sewer drain snake is fed down the line, the safer it is for you. Pull the end of the cable out of the machine reel and put it into the cleanout. Hold the cable tightly to avoid kinks in the snake and unnecessary injuries to yourself. Once the cable is in the drain, turn the machine on and feed the snake steadily down the line. When you reach a clog, ease the cable back a few feet then feed the cable forward again until you can feel the resistance. Continue moving the cable back and forth to dislodge the clog. Depending on the buildup, you might need a blade attachment to fully clear it. Once cleared, feed the cable into the drain further to make sure it is completely unclogged. When you retract the cable, turn off the machine while the end of the sewer drain snake is still in the line, then remove fully and check that everything is running smoothly When everything is good to go, close the cleanout and you are done.
Be aware! You need different cables for different jobs, just as you need different drain machines. A sled machine is used for bigger jobs than sink machines, so the cable will be bigger, too. You could use a smaller cable for big jobs, but it would be less effective and more likely to break or have other issues. It sometimes takes some trial and error to learn when to use each cable, but experience will make it easier.
