However, learning how to correctly handle the drain cable can drastically increase its life, saving you time and money. Here are some basics on how to use a sewer drain snake properly when clearing a main line. Starting off, locate the main line cleanout and remove the cap. Check for standing water in the pipe. If you notice standing water, run the drain cleaning cable toward the street. If you do not see any standing water, you will need to run the cable toward the house. Make sure to position the drain machine as close as possible to the cleanout. The less slack there is when the sewer drain snake is fed down the line, the safer it is for you. Pull the end of the cable out of the machine reel and put it into the cleanout. Hold the cable tightly to avoid kinks in the snake and unnecessary injuries to yourself.
